The escalator that made me cry

As I was crazy about visiting the Japanese theme parks my friend was crazy about Japanese comic and anime merchandise. That is good, because otherwise I would never have visited funny places like Nakano Broadway.

Here you can find everything an anime/manga fan dreams of – and more. On several floors full with arcades, manga, anime, toy or idol shops. Here is where the geek subcultures meet!

Strolling through the stores we spent the whole afternoon discovering things you would have never thought they would exist (did you know that there is Ronald Mc Donald merchandise?).

But for me getting to Nakano Broadway was the highlight of the day. After a week in Japan, I had forgotten that there are train stations on this planet, that are not accessible. Nakano station is one of them. Or is it really?

We got off the train to discover that there was no lift. With a little help I am able to ride up or down escalators, but I had never done this with my travel buddy and I didn't know how Japanese station guards would react. While figuring out what to do we spotted a wheelchair sign next to the escalator with an intercom next to it.

Before we were able to decide what to do a friendly passerby who understood what was going on contacted the station guards. What happened next would overwhelm me so much that I actually started crying – for joy! The station guards stopped the escalator, pushed a few buttons and bibbidi-bobbidi-boo, magically three steps formed to one step that was wide enough to carry me down safely. Once again Japan had proven: There is no problem, that cannot be solved!
